Canada Northern Lights
Canada is one of the best places in the world to view the Aurora Borealis, a vast country teeming with wildlife and jaw-dropping landscapes. Much of Canada’s North is unspoiled by towns and light pollution and lies under the auroral oval, offering fantastic opportunities to view the Northern Lights from multiple locations.
The best months to travel are from October to March, although they can be seen all year round, it is much easier and more likely during winter.
With its Northern provinces extending deep into the Arctic Circle, this great wilderness is perfect for thrilling winter activities from sleigh rides to snowmobiling and ice fishing.

In Search of the Northern Lights in Canada
There are many provinces in Canada to choose from when planning a holiday to the Northern Lights.
Here are a few popular choices:
Whitehorse, Yukon
Whitehorse is the capital city of Yukon and is easily accessible by plane, road, or cruise ship. Its downtown sits on the edge of the Yukon River, a small and charming city with a range of attractions. Stay in a log cabin-style hotel or a glass-fronted chalet.
The Northern Lights are a regular sight between autumn and spring and a tour will take you away from the light pollution of the city for optimum viewing.
Combine with exciting activities such as dogsledding, exploring the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, snowmobiling on Lake Laberge and visiting Takhini Hot Springs.

Yellowknife, Northwest Territories
One of the closest cities in Canada to the North Pole and the capital of the Northwest Territories.
It sits directly under the auroral oval making it one of the best places in the world to view the dancing auroras! Yellowknife sits on the northern shore of Great Slave Lake. The frozen lakes during winter provide idyllic conditions for snowmobiling, snow-shoeing, ice skating and ice fishing. Other winter activities include dogsledding.

Churchill, Manitoba
From some of the most intense auroral activity than any other place on Earth to being known as the ‘polar capital of the world’, Churchill offers an extraordinary Arctic experience!
Located on the shores of Hudson Bay, this isolated town can only be accessed by air or by train.
Its remoteness is part of its charm. Combine this spellbinding light display with an opportunity to see the polar bears roam in the wild from the safety of a Tundra Vehicle or stay in a protected wilderness lodge right in the polar bears’ habitat. The Northern Lights are best viewed from January to March when the skies are at their darkest, a cosy option would be to watch from the comfort of an Aurora Dome!

Churchill is a world away from other holiday destinations.
Here are a few extra ideas for you to include on your holiday to the Northern Lights in Churchill!
- Take a short hike across the flats to the Ithaca shipwreck
- Visit the downed cargo plane Miss Piggy, which crash-landed in 1979 after developing engine trouble, without a single fatality. It makes for a quirky stop-off!
- Pop into the post office while in town to have your passport stamped with their unusual polar bear stamp.
